Chicago Off-Site Session: Farm on Ogden

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Farm on Ogden is a partnership of the Chicago Botanic Garden and Lawndale Christian Health Center (LCHC) and is managed by Windy City Harvest, the Chicago Botanic Garden’s urban agriculture program, in partnership with LCHC. The Farm on Ogden opened in June of 2018 and in its first year has trained 100 people for jobs in food-related industries, reached 5,000 customers through the year-round farm stand, and aggregated 133,000 pounds of produce. The Farm on Ogden has also served 400 patients through the Veggie Rx Program, delivering boxes of fresh produce, nutrition education, and cooking lessons to LCHC patients with diet-related diseases who are also food insecure. The site is home to a 7,300 sq. foot greenhouse, a 50,000 gallon aquaponics system, a commercial kitchen, an indoor market, a teaching kitchen and classroom, cold storage, and a youth farm.

Family Foundations played a major role in making the vision for the Farm on Ogden a reality, supporting both the capital campaign and the Windy City Harvest program. Harrison Steans of the Steans Family Foundation served as a board member of the Chicago Botanic Garden and was a staunch advocate for the expansion of Windy City Harvest. He championed support for the Farm on Ogden and was instrumental in making it a reality. He was present at the Farm’s opening in 2018, and sadly passed away early in 2019.

Designed by the 2019 National Forum Host Committee, this experience will offer Forum participants the chance to learn more about effective and ongoing philanthropic collaborations in Greater Chicago. These will be small group experiences - each limited to 25 participants.

For those attending the off-site visits at 2 pm, please sit towards the rear of the room during the concurrent plenary session (tables noted with reserved signs) to exit early. Thank you!
