Chicago offers a compelling story about the many barriers faced by its youth and the innovative steps being taken to overcome them. While many challenges remain, the public schools have made remarkable progress in improving student academic performance, attracting the attention of national researchers. Other groundbreaking programs prioritize supports for young people who must overcome major hurdles to escape crime and violence in their neighborhoods. This conversation with Janice Jackson, CEO of Chicago Public Schools, and Arne Duncan, former U.S. Secretary of Education and a previous CEO of CPS who currently leads Chicago CRED, will describe how innovation, investments in public education, including from family philanthropy, and targeted job training are helping young people of color aspire to greater goals in life.

Lunch is available at 11:45 am - the session begins at 12:30 pm.
